![]() ![]() ![]() Before the stroke she had enjoyed dancing regularly, but thought she would be unable to continue after it happened - her ballet teacher thought differently however and persuaded her to dance again. Magdalen had a severe stroke four years ago while out horse-riding and attributes much of her remarkable recovery to her love of ballet. Magdalen has written for a number of publications including The Observer, Sunday Express and Daily Telegraph in the UK and Vogue in Germany. They wanted the programs to be as close to the books as possible and even held auditions for the character of Josie and filmed scenes at Magdalen's old school in Ramsbottom, Lancashire. Granada TV loved the books and made three television series of Josie Smith. The books reflect Magdalen's own childhood, growing up fatherless and with very little money in the north of England. The first book Josie Smith was runner-up in the Guardian Young Fiction Award and Josie Smith and Eileen won the Smarties Prize. The books have since met with great critical acclaim. She created the irrepressible and much-loved character Josie Smith in 1989. ![]() In 1975 she threw in her job as a potter, sold her house, her car, her pots and brought her young son to Italy, knowing nobody and speaking only English. Magdalen Nabb was born in Lancashire in 1947 but has lived in Florence for the last 25 years. ![]()
